June 25, 2024Newborn Wind: What it is and How to Help Your Baby
As a new parent, it can be overwhelming to navigate the different types of discomfort your newborn may experience. One of the most common issues is newborn wind, also known as gas. In this blog post, we will explore what newborn wind is, how it presents itself in a baby, and remedies that can help.
What is Newborn Wind?
Newborn wind is a common issue that many babies experience during their first few months of life. It occurs when a baby swallows air while feeding or crying, which then gets trapped in their digestive system. The trapped air can cause discomfort, bloating, and even pain for the baby.
How Does Newborn Wind Present Itself in a Baby?
Newborn wind can present itself in several ways. Some common signs include:
- Fussiness or crying: A baby with wind may become fussy or cry for extended periods, especially after feeding.
- Distended belly: The baby’s belly may appear bloated or distended.
- Difficulty sleeping: Wind can cause discomfort, which may make it challenging for a baby to sleep soundly.
- Passing gas: A baby with wind may pass gas more frequently than usual.
- Arching back: A baby may arch their back while crying or fussing due to the discomfort caused by the trapped air.
How to Help Baby Relieve Their Wind
Thankfully, there are many ways parents can help relieve their baby’s wind. Some effective methods include:
- Burping: Burping your baby after each feeding can help release any trapped air in their digestive system. Gently pat your baby’s back or rub it in circular motions until they burp.
- Massage: Gently massaging your baby’s belly can help stimulate their digestive system and release trapped air. Use a warm, damp cloth or your fingertips to massage their belly in a clockwise motion.
- Bicycle legs: Lay your baby on their back and gently move their legs in a bicycle motion. This movement can help release trapped air.
- Hold upright: Holding your baby upright after feeding can help prevent them from swallowing excess air. Try holding them upright for 20-30 minutes after each feeding.
- Consider feeding position: Some feeding positions, such as using a bottle with a slow flow nipple or feeding at a slight incline, can help prevent your baby from swallowing excess air.
Remedies that Can Help
If your baby is still experiencing discomfort from wind after trying the above methods, there are several remedies that can help. It is essential to speak with your GP or health visitor before trying any of these remedies to ensure they are safe for your baby.
- Infant gas drops such as Infacol: Over-the-counter infant gas drops can help relieve discomfort by breaking up gas bubbles in your baby’s digestive system.
- Probiotics: Some studies suggest that probiotics can help relieve colic and wind in babies.
- Gripe water: Gripe water is a natural remedy that can help relieve gas and colic in babies. It typically contains a combination of herbs, such as fennel, ginger, and chamomile, which can help soothe your baby’s digestive system.
Some of the remedies do have ages associated with them and are not all safe from birth; Please ensure you consult your GP, health visitor or pharmacist prior to use.
Newborn wind is a common issue that many babies experience during their first few months of life.
